Meet Troy Mayne

Troy is an Australian professional underwater photographer and children’s author who created Wally’s Reef Gang from real Great Barrier Reef animals and photographs.

Bringing Stories into Schools

Troy has shared Sorry Wally with children during school and community visits, combining real underwater photography with stories about friendship, bullying, courage and caring for the reef. These photographs record children reading and responding to the original book together.

Sorry Wally in Timor-Leste

Sorry Wally was translated into Tetum as part of a literacy project supporting children in Timor-Leste. The project connected Troy’s underwater photographs and story with the Mary MacKillop East Timorese Literacy Fund’s work to provide familiar-language reading resources.

Why Troy Writes

Troy writes stories to help children love reading, meet real reef animals, and explore friendship and feelings.
